WIRKSWORTH is an extensive parish, township and market town and a terminal station of a branch of the Midland railway from Derby,
13 miles north-north-west from Derby, 4 south from Matlock Town, 9½ west-by-south from Alfreton, 8½ north-east from Ashborne,
5½ north-west from Belper and 139 from London by road, in the Western division of the County, hundred and petty sessional division
of Wirksworth, union of Belper, rural deanery or Wirksworth, archdeaconry of Derby and diocese of Southwell. The town is pleasantly situated
in a valley nearly surrounded by hills, at the southern extremity of the mining district, and is well paved and lighted with gas from works
at Warm brook, the property of the Wirksworth Gas Light and Coke Company Limited, and supplied with water derived from springs on the
Wirksworth Moors, and is governed by a local board of 9 members, formed in 1877. The Cromford and High Peak railway, now the property of
the London and North Western Company, has a goods station at Steeple Grange in this parish.
The church of St. Mary is a cruciform building in the Later style of English Gothic, consisting of chancel with aisles and clerestory,
transepts, clerestoried nave of three bays, aisles, south porch and a central tower with a small lead-covered spire, containing 6 bells,
dating from 1702: there are monuments to Anthony Lowe esq, servant to Henry VII. Henry VIII. Edward VI. and Queen Mary (1555), to Anthony
Gell esq. founder of the school and almshouses, with his effigy in a gown and ruff, dated 1583; and a mural monument to Sir John Gell bart,
of Hopton, a parliamentary commander, ob. Nov. 1671: there are 13 stained memorial windows and two fonts, the more ancient being a
Norman basin without date; the other bears date 1662: in several parts of the walls are pieces of rude sculpture, discovered during the
repairs in 1820; one of these, inserted in the north aisle, represents some events in the life of Our Saviour : the chancel was restored
in 1855, when an ancient piscina and an aumbry were discovered, and the rest of the fabric in 1876, under the direction of the late Sir
George Gilbert Scott M.A. at a cost of about £10,000: there are about 700 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from 1610, of
marriages and burials from 1608. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £60, gross yearly value £142, including
41 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Southwell, and held since 1851 by the Rev. Thomas Tunstall Smith M.A. of
St. Peter's College, Cambridge, and surrogate ; George Henry Errington esq, is the impropriator.
The chapels in the town are: —Baptist, Cold well street, erected in 1885 at a cost of £2,200, has sittings for 350 persons;
Congregational, Coldwell street, erected in 1688 and restored in 1868, at a cost of £1,350, will seat 300; Free Methodist, St. John
street, erected in 1886, has 300 sittings; Primitive Methodist, The Dale, erected in l,859, seats 250; Primitive Methodist, Bole hill,
an ancient stone building, rebuilt in 1832, has 180 sittings; Wesleyan Methodist, Chapel lane, erected in 1810, seats 160, and the Wesleyan
Reform, The Dale, erected in 1856, 100.
The cemetery at the north end of the town comprises about 3 acres, with two small mortuary chapels, and is under the control of a burial
board of 9 members; there is also a small Baptist cemetery in North street.
The Town Hall, erected in 1871 by a company, and capable of holding 600 persons, is a building of stone in the Italian style, with a lofty
tower, and is used for meetings and entertainments.
The Moot Hall, Chapel lane, erected in 1814 by the Hon. Charles Bathurst, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, is also of stone: a Court
Leet is held here annually, as also the Barmote courts for settling all mining disputes, which courts are held when required: here is
deposited an ancient brass dish, used as a standard for measuring ore,, which any person has the privilege of digging and searching for
in any part of the wapentake orchards, pleasure grounds, churchyards and gardens excepted, without making any compensation to the owner of the land.
Bole Hill Institute, the site of which was given by Thomas W. Hunt esq, is a structure of brick, erected in 1889 at a cost of £150,
raised by subscription, and includes a reading room, well supplied with newspapers.
The market is held on Tuesdays, for provisions and corn; and there are fairs on Shrove Tuesday, Easter Tuesday, second Tuesday in May, July
and September, and the third Tuesday in November, principally for cattle, the 1ast being also a statute fair.
There are lead mines in the neighbourhood, which, by an inscription on a pig of lead found in 1777, appear to have been worked so early as
the time of the Emperor Adrian, at the commencement of the and century. but few mines at the present time are at work. The Hopton-Wood Stone
Company Limited have extensive quarries at Middle Peak in this parish. Many of the inhabitants are employed in the numerous quarries and
in the manufacture of tape.
The B Troop of the Derbyshire Yeomanry Cavalry and E Company, 2nd Volunteer Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Derbyshire Regiment) are stationed
in the town.
The Wirksworth Cottage Hospital, established in 1867, is a useful institution, and is supported by subscription; it contains seven beds.
Dinah Morris (Mrs. Elizabeth Evans), the once celebrated exponent of Methodism, whose character has been so powerfully depicted in that remarkable
work, "Adam Bede," by George Eliot, lived and died here, her death taking place in 1849: the part of the hero of the story is also supposed
to have been founded on the life of her husband's brother William. The almshouses for six poor men, are situated near the Grammar school.
The poor of this parish receive £7 5s. annually from the Rev. Francis Gisborne's Staveley charity(1818); in 1693 Francis Bunting left
£5 to be given away in sums of 5s. each to twenty poor housekeepers on St. Stephen's day; Elizabeth Blackburn in 1724 left lands now
producing £14 yearly, for the poor of this town; and in 1822 Mrs. Bridget Cheney gave £100 to be invested in the Savings bank,
the interest to be divided amongst the poor: several other charities, left at various dates since 1574, produce about £100 yearly:
Bagshaw's charity of £56 8s. yearly is distributed in sums of £1 to poor widows or decayed housekeepers; one-fourth the amount
goes to Middleton for the same purpose.
The late Alfred Arkwright esq. of Wirksworth, has presented about 8 acres of land, near Miller's Green, for the purposes of a recreation ground.
Frederic Charles Arkwright esq. J.P. of Willersley, Mrs. Price Wood, the trustees of Alfred Arkwright esq. Joseph Wheatcroft esq. J.P. Capt.
Edward R. Leacroft, of Rowberrow, Somerset, Arthur Stubbs esq. of Sherwood Rise, Nottingham, and H. Chandos-Pole-Gell esq. J.P. of Hopton,
are the principal landowners.
The area of the township is 3,020 acres ; rateable value, £12,472; the population in 1881 was 3,678, which forms the Local Board district.
Verger, Charles Hanson.
Callow is a township in the parish of Wirksworth and union of Ashborne, 2 miles south-west from Wirksworth.
H. Chandos-Pole-Gell esq. J.P. and H. Walthall Walthall esq, M.A., J.P. of Alton Manor, are the sole landowners. The area is 1,259 acres; rateable
value, £1,714 ; the population in 1881 was 93.
Hopton, with Griff Grange, form a township, in the parish of Wirksworth, union of Ashborne, the former 2 miles west-by-south from Wirksworth
station, the latter about 2½ north-west. George Henry Errington esq, is the impropriator. Hopton was the property and residence of that zealous
Parliamentary officer, Sir John Gell bart. who, when Charles I. had raised the royal standard at Nottingham, proceeded to Derby, assembled a strong
body of troops for the Parliament, and performed a conspicuous part throughout the war. There are extensive stone quarries in the neighbourhood. In
1719 Sir Philip Gell bart. endowed almshouses for four poor persons, and directed a rent-charge of £22 6s. yearly to be paid to them out of his
manor, called Griff Grange: they were first occupied Sept. 1722. Hopton Hall, a mansion of ancient origin, is now the seat of Henry Chandos-Pole-Gell esq. J.P.
GRIFF GRANGE, 2 miles north, formerly extra-parochial, is now included in this township. Henry Chandos-Pole-Gell esq. J.P. is the principal landowner.
The acreage is 1,450; rateable value, £1,470 ; the population in 1881 was 123.
Ashleyhay is a township comprising several farms in the parish of Wirksworth, hundred of Appletree, 1¾ miles south-east from Wirksworth;
it is bounded on the west by the line of railway and on the east by Alderwasley. Here are Primitive Methodist and Wesleyan chapels. Albert Frederick
Hurt esq. J.P. of Alderwasley, who is lord of the manor; Henry Walthall Walthall esq. J.P. of Alton, Dr. Adsetts and Henry Swingler esq. J.P. of
Idridgehay, are the principal landowners. The acreage is 1,443 ; rateable value, £1,744; the population in 1881 was 218.
Alderwasley is given under a separate heading and Biggin is annexed to Hulland.
