Place: Darley Dale
Property / Street / Road: Hackney Methodist Church, Greenaway Lane
Date: 1910 - 1914
Description/Historical Information: The Church was built in 1908, as a Primitive Methodist church, to replace a smaller church a little further along the road (to the south-east). The original building is still standing although is no longer used as a place of worship.
The foundation stone, beside the doorway on the right hand side, reads J. W. Wildgoose Matlock June 13th 1908. To the left of the doorway is carved [UP]PPER --- DGE.
The new church was officially opened in the afternoon of Saturday 10th October 1908. The ceremony was performed by Mrs. J. W. Wildgoose, who was given an inscribed silver key by Mrs. Burton. The surname Burton is strongly associated with Primitive Methodism in the Matlocks (see Primitive Methodist Churches & Chapels, Matlock Bank, Matlock Moor and Starkholmes). The Wildgoose family also supported these churches.
The group of 8 men and five women are standing both on and in front of steps leading up to the main door of the new church. The steps have been replaced with tarmac today, presumably to make access easier. It is possible they were attending a family wedding; the bride could have been the young woman with the white scarf second from the right. Please get in touch if you recognise any of the people in the photograph.
