Description/Historical Information: |
Two young dairy maids making butter out of doors,
standing behind an Arch Albany Butter Worker. One of the pair was
Miss Nellie Forbes, the daughter of Mr. William Forbes, who was renowned
in the district for her butter production.
Nellie,
probably on the right, was then aged 22 and her assistant was probably
her sister Maggie who was two years younger.
Their
equipment included the latest appliances - an Alexandra separator
and a Llewellwyn churn to take 50lb. The farm turned out about 40lb.
of butter per week and in the summer they also made cream cheese.
Maggie is probably the young woman holding something
to strain the cheese. |
