|A 'Stray' would normally be defined
as being found outside the county of Derbyshire, and
sometimes overseas. However, as this is a one place
study rather than a county study references are also
included where people have been found within Derbyshire,
but in neither Matlock nor Matlock Bath.
- Apprentice records
- Burial and other church or chapel registers
- Census returns*
- Memorial inscriptions
- Militia lists
- Phillimore marriage indexes
- Passenger lists
- Old books
- Other sources
*For example, the 1861 census for Wales includes the families
of William BUNTING and James KNOWLES in Holyhead, presumably
waiting to emigrate to the USA.
County Codes are used, where appropriate.
Please Note: To reduce the amount of text, not every family
member is named when a Stray has been found in a census
return if they weren't born in the Matlocks. The word "children" may
describe an individual's adult children.
