This delightful engraving of Belper's mill was done especially for Davies's "History of Derby" by Henry Moore.

BELPER
"The rapid improvements, made in almost every branch of the manufactures of this country, during the last fifty years, are not more conspicuous in the increased wealth of the nation at large, than in the rising eminences of those places, which before were hardly known.— The most populous of our present manufacturing towns, were, at the beginning of the last century, either not known at all, or as significant country villages only. Such was Belper: which though now considered as holding the second rank in point of population among the towns in Derbyshire, was, prior to the year 1776, as low in population as it was backward in civility ; and considered as the insignificant residence of a few uncivilized nailers."
