'Rock Side Hydropathic Establishment was erected by Mr Charles ROWLAND,
in 1862, and subsequently considerably enlarged.'
"History, Topography and Directory of Derbyshire"
(1895) by T. Bulmer and Co,, Matlock
The date for Rockside that was provided by Bulmer, was two years
out. Rockside was built in 1860.
Charles ROWLAND, living at Rockside in the 1871
census, advertised as a Professor of Hydropathy & Land Owner;
he was born at Burton on Trent in Staffordshire. In 1871 his wife
Sarah was living slightly down the hill as she was running Matlock
House Establishment; she too stated that she was a Professor of
Hydropathy
& Land Owner; she was born at Coton in the Elms, Derbyshire.
They advertised in several Trades Directories including Kelly's
1864. By 1876 they were
only advertising Matlock House Hydro. |
