This document is the minutes of a meeting about a proposal for a House of Industry or Workhouse, and contains the names of a number of gentleman of the parish of Matlock. Matlock and Matlock Bath were still in the same parish at this time and the list includes a number of Matlock Bath residents. It was a printed letter, of which 100 were printed, and was intended for general circulation.


New Bath, Matlock.

26th Dec. 1831.


At a Meeting, held pursuant to notice duly given in the Parish
Church of Matlock, aforesaid, and held at the above time and
place, to take into consideration the expediency of providing a
House of Industry for the said Parish of Matlock.

Mr. GILBERT in the Chair.

It was Resolved — That a Committee be appointed, with directions to make themselves acquainted with the proceedings of other Parishes, as to the advantages they have experienced by adopting Houses of Industry for their Paupers; and to collect such other information, make such estimates, and offer such plans as will enable a general Meeting in Vestry assembled to decide upon the propriety of erecting House of Industry in the said Parish of Matlock. — And that the following persons do constitute and are hereby appointed such Committee, with power to add to their number, and that any five of them shall he competent to act. — viz:

Resolved — That the Candlemas Meeting [^Wednesday first day of February^] be the time appointed to review the Report of the Committee, and to adopt such plans as shall appear adviseable, in order to carry the views of this Meeting into effect.

Resolved — That the Committee do meet at Mr. SAXTON'S on the Monday [^27th January^] before Candle-mas day; immediately after the Meeting of the Board of Health, to agree upon their report.

Resolved — That one hundred copies of the above Resolutions be printed and distributed to the different Members of the Committee and other Inhabitants of the Parish.

This one was sent to W. E. NIGHTINGALE at Embley Park, Hampshire on 13 Feb 1832. It was accompanied by a personal note from Mr. Gilbert advising him of "a measure at this present moment in contemplation of reform in our parish affairs". Gilbert hoped he would attend the proposed meeting at the New Bath and inserted dates into the text - shown as [^--^] in the transcript.

In the end the parish of Matlock did not have a workhouse. See the next page which shows how the poor were dealt with and where some of them went instead.
