Place: |
Lea, Matlock |
Property / Street / Road: |
Three Horse Shoes Public House, Lea Road |
Date: |
1910 - 1914 |
Description/Historical Information: |
Motor charabanc group, men and boys outside the
pub. Its sign is unreadable, unfortunately, but the landlord was
John William Holmes. In the 1911 census, aged 38, he kept the Post
Office in Lea but also worked as a domestic gardener. He took over
the Three Horse Shoes from George Wragg who, by 1911, had been the
publican for at least twelve years. The group were members of the
Lea Amateurs football team and their supporters, who had hired both
vehicles to take them to a cup match at Ashbourne. Lea Amateurs were
in Division II of Matlock and District League in March 1911.
There is a slightly different version of this photograph that was
published in Dales Echo of 20 May 1998, which shows that the charabanc
was a Napier, reg. R224-.
It was owned by Hands of Matlock. Was the driver a Brookhouse? Also
see VLA4960, which was photographed on
the same day and can be seen queued up behind the first vehicle.
The light coloured charabanc is another Hand's Napier, reg. R 1693. |
