Four taxis, with drivers, outside Hand's Garage behind the Gate Inn at the corner of Smedley Street
and Rutland Street. They had racks for luggage on the top of each vehicle [also see VLA4945 and
VLA4952].
On the left is a Minerva of circa 1907. Although it had no number plate, its license number (-1577) was painted on the
radiator. The three taxis on the right are all 1909-10 Belsize landaulettes. Hodgkinsons of Matlock were to auction two of
them in 1920 ("Derbyshire Advertiser and Journal", 19 March 1920), alongside a 30 seater charabanc. They
were 20 h.p., with lamps etc and both were in perfect running order.
The drivers were all smartly dressed in great coats and caps, though the caps were not all the same.
The lines in the road are tram lines. Trams would pass each other
on the Smedley Street junction when they were on their way down the
hill to Crown Square or up the hill to just below Rockside on Wellington Street. |
