Hand's cars. Two of their taxi fleet, with drivers, parked outside Central Buildings at the junction of Smedley Street with
Rutland Street. H. Bailey's pharmacy and Charles Colledge's shop can be seen behind them. Mr. Colledge's wife sold needlework, art and knitting products.
The nearer vehicle is a Minerva car of circa 1907; although it does not have a number plate the license number (-1577) is painted on the radiator,
which was not uncommon for the time. There is a spare tyre next to the driver's seat and a horn above it. However, there was no door, so the driver
would have needed his smart great coat in cold weather.
The vehicle next to the shop doorway, a Belsize landaulette dating from 1909-1910, had the registration number R3192. Also see VLA4938
and VLA4945.
Behind the vehicles is a single decked bridge or walkway above Smedley Street connecting the main hydro with the newer buildings on the right.
Although it can't be seen here, by this time a second, double decked, bridge had been built across the road only a few yards away. |
