A postcard of Matlock from a painting by Henry
Hadfield Cubley, dated 1903. Cubley lived in Matlock Bath for
a quite number of years and painted many local scenes. Smedley's
Hydro and the chimney of its boiler house are unmistakable in this
picture, although the proportions of the building are not quite
the same in reality. Cubley chose the view from the Hall Leys,
shown before it was developed by the local Council and turned into
the great asset that it is to the town today. We are seeing Smedley's
over the tops of buildings on Bank Road, though it is difficult
to decide which buildings they are, although one could be Mrs.
Smedley's Hydropathic Hospital.
Perhaps the people the artist has included are his wife and one
of his daughters, or both his daughters. He has made them as
equally important as the Hydro in his composition, if not more
so, as the eye is immediately drawn to the red dress. Also see Old
Matlock, which includes three figures.

Ralph Tuck & Sons "Oilette" [Regd.] Postcard 1705. "Matlock

King and Queen.
The card was posted at Ryde, IOW, on 15 Mar 1906 and sent to Mrs.
Sutton of Ryde by her sister Emma. The message is unconnected to
Matlock. Another card was posted in 1904.
The postcard had the usual side bar for the card's title and message
that was part of all postcards produced in the first decade of the
twentieth century but has been omitted to present a slightly larger
image.
