Burgon's, 1952

Although it is not clear exactly when this photograph of the all male members of staff who were employed by Burgon's Ltd. was taken, we believe it was before the First World War. The first manager of the shop on the corner of Crown Square and Causeway Lane was Mr. George Edward Tomlinson who lived on Lime Grove Walk[1]. He had been employed by them for close on 40 years and had previously worked for them at Barton upon Irwell[2]. He passed away in February 1919, aged 62. He is probably standing in the shop doorway.

Several of the shop's staff enlisted during the War and some were casualties. Their names appear on Matlock's War Memorial on Pic Tor.

See Matlock & Matlock Bath War Memorials
Individual men named on the Memorial, includes the following (known) Burgon's employees: Alexander Bruce Campbell | Harry Clay | Wilfred Hallam | Arthur Poultney |
