Occupations in 1871

An examination of the occupations of those living in Matlock and District at the time of the 1871 census highlights major changes across the seven Enumeration districts (EDs) within the Parish of Matlock. Most of these changes were on Matlock Bank, with the ever increasing popularity of hydropathy and the number of recently built establishments involved in the industry. Smedley's Hydro entries were on 9 census pages over the two sections of ED13, for example. There were different 822 occupations found by the Enumerator in a total of 5226. On census night there were 174 visitors in the Matlocks, many of whom provided their occupation to the the census enumerator.
See: Miscellany: Nineteenth century expansion, population and councils for 1871.

Immediately below is a list of the districts and a rough guide to the area covered. The official description of each district in the parish can be found in the 1871 Census Index.

Enumeration District (ED)   Description of District, a rough guide
Enumeration District 10 Chapel Hill, Scarthin Nick, Cromford Market Place, Willersley
Enumeration District 11 Matlock [Bath] Independent Chapel to the Vicar's Residence
Enumeration District 12 Matlock [Bath] from the Vicar's Residence to Hall Dale
Enumeration District 13 Matlock [Bank] - includes Rockside Hydro & most of Smedley's
Enumeration District 13 - rest of Matlock [Bank]
Enumeration District 14 Southern Side of the Matlock and Chesterfield Road and on the Eastern side of the Matlock and Alfreton Road including part of Lumsdale, Cuckoostone Farm, Wold Farm, the Moor and all the Houses on the Eastern side of the Lane from Asker Lane Toll Gate.
Enumeration District 15 Southern side of the Matlock and Alfreton Road including Cliff, Riber, Hearthstone, Town, High and Low Leas.
Enumeration District 16 Starkholmes, Woodseats, Woodend, Bowwood, and all the Houses on the North Side of Lea Brook.

Some points to note:
  1. One of the limitations of the data is that it doesn't tell us where and for whom people worked, unless they lived at and worked in the same residence. So we cannot establish who someone's employer was If they worked in a mill or in a particular quarry, for example, just because the mill or quarry was near their abode. There is no supporting evidence. It is known from written material that some workers walked a considerable distance to their place of employment.

  2. In addition, addresses are mostly limited to Matlock Bath, Bank, Matlock Green, Starkholmes, etc. There are few street names given. This is not overly helpful today as the addresses recorded are mostly too general.
However, more can be discovered about people who were in business. Compare the names in the EDs with those listed in either Kelly's Directory, 1864 or Kelly's Directory, 1876 to see who were shopkeepers.

  3. An encouraging sign was the number of scholars in the district, although sometimes even 1 year olds were classed as scholars by their parents! These numbers were also swelled by non residents attending private boarding schools in the Matlocks, such as Miss Peall's in Matlock Bath or Mr. Clarke's Matlock Green Academy, as well a sprinkling amongst the hydro guests (e.g. at Rockside). They are included because, although a scholar cannot be classed as part of the workforce, this information was written in the occupation section of the census. Similarly, some sons, daughters or wives cropped up in the "occupation" boxes. If they were, for example, a farmer's son or daughter and of a reasonable age for the times they probably worked or helped out on the family farm.

  4. To explain the seemingly high number of occupations marked [none given] on the first row, whilst the numbers include all ages, there were 413 children whose ages ranged from just a few days old up to and including those of ten years of age. At the other end of the age range there were just 59 who were 65 years old or more.

  5. Whilst the majority of occupations are the same as the census schedule, a number of spelling variants - such as Ag Lab to Agricultural Labourer - have been harmonised to produce a single entry, provided there is no ambiguity.
