This large group photograph shows the students and staff of Matlock
Training College on the lawn of Rockside Hall of Residence. There
were no male students at that time and only two male members
of staff. Teacher training courses lasted for two years and were
not degree courses.
The views from Rockside were spectacular. Amongst the buildings
in the background are the rooftops of Wellington Street, the chimney
of Paton & Baldwin's
and the spire of the Congregational Church (now gone). Riber hillside
and the castle are across the valley.
