Place: Buxton
Property / Street / Road: The Empire Hotel
Date: 2 Nov 1914 - 3 Feb 1915
Description/Historical Information: 2/6th Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment).
The large garage in the Hotel's grounds, where the Mess was, had a concrete floor. There was a plentiful water supply from the standpipes, so the whole place was swilled and scrubbed each day (WO 95/3025/3, Regimental War Diary, 1914 - 1916, TNA: section written Nov 1914).
Four soldiers standing in the doorway of the garage / Mess which was where fellow soldiers ate their meals. Three of the four are holding cooking pots of various kinds. Third from the left is James Edgar Brocklehurst.
